Depression Therapy
When everything feels harder than it should.
Maybe you're exhausted no matter how much you sleep. Things you used to enjoy don't feel the same anymore. You're getting through work, school, parenting, or relationships—but it feels like you're running on empty.
Sometimes depression looks like sadness. Other times, it looks like irritability, numbness, isolation, exhaustion, or simply thinking, “I don't feel like myself anymore.”
At Fernandina Beach Therapy, our therapists work with children, teens, and adults experiencing depression, low mood, burnout, and emotional exhaustion. Therapy gives you a place to understand what's happening and start finding a way forward.
Depression Doesn't Always Look Like Sadness
You can laugh with friends, show up to work, take care of your family, and still be struggling.
Depression might look like:
-
Feeling tired all the time
-
Losing interest in things you normally enjoy
-
Wanting to stay in bed or withdraw from others
-
Feeling numb, disconnected, or “blah”
-
Becoming more irritable or frustrated
-
Struggling to concentrate or make decisions
-
Feeling guilty for not doing “enough”
-
Having little motivation to start even simple tasks
-
Feeling like you're just going through the motions
-
Being incredibly hard on yourself
-
Wondering why everyone else seems to handle life better
-
Feeling overwhelmed by things that used to feel manageable
And sometimes there's no obvious reason for feeling this way.
You don't need to justify why you're struggling in order to deserve support.
Therapy That Meets You Where You Are
When you're depressed, being told to exercise more, think positively, or “look at the bright side” usually isn't very helpful.
You probably already know there are things you could be doing. The problem is that depression can make actually doing them feel impossible.
Our therapists focus on understanding what's happening beneath the surface and helping you take realistic steps forward—without judgment and without expecting you to change everything overnight.
Depending on your needs and your therapist, treatment may incorporate approaches such as CBT, DBT, ACT, mindfulness, behavioral activation, play-based interventions, and EMDR.
Together, we may work on understanding negative thought patterns, rebuilding routines, reconnecting with meaningful activities, improving relationships, developing healthier coping skills, processing difficult experiences, and finding ways to feel more like yourself again.
Depression Can Look Different at Every Age
For children, depression may show up as irritability, frequent emotional outbursts, changes in play, withdrawing from friends or family, difficulty at school, sleep changes, or saying negative things about themselves. Our therapists use developmentally appropriate and play-based approaches to help children express what they may not yet have words for.
For teens, depression can look like sleeping more, isolating in their room, declining grades, losing interest in activities, irritability, low self-esteem, or feeling disconnected from friends and family. Therapy offers teens a space where they can talk openly, understand what they're experiencing, and develop healthier ways of coping.
For adults, depression might mean going through the motions every day while feeling completely drained inside. It can affect motivation, relationships, parenting, work, sleep, confidence, and your ability to enjoy the life you've worked hard to build.
You don't have to wait until things become unbearable before reaching out.
Progress Doesn't Have to Happen All at Once
When you're depressed, even the idea of “getting better” can feel like another thing you're supposed to accomplish.
Therapy isn't about suddenly becoming a completely different person.
Sometimes progress starts much smaller.
Getting out of the house.
Answering the text you've been avoiding.
Enjoying something again.
Setting a boundary.
Being a little kinder to yourself.
Having enough energy to do something that matters to you.
Or simply realizing, “Today wasn't as hard as yesterday.”
Those moments matter.
You Don't Have to Figure This Out Alone
You don't need to know exactly what's causing your depression. You don't need to know which type of therapy you need. And you don't need to wait until you feel motivated enough to start.
You just have to start somewhere.
Tell us a little about what you've been experiencing, and we'll help connect you with a therapist on our team who fits your needs.
You deserve more than simply getting through the day. Let's work toward helping you feel connected to your life again.
